And Still More Hog Days Stuff!

Model T and A Road Rally!

I HATE this new technology. I can't make it work right! We imagine that's what all the horse owners were saying in 1908 when they tried their hand at one of  these new gadgets called horseless carriages aka automobiles.  Surely, there was nothing left to invent now! And now you can spend part of your Hog Days weekend checking out the latest in 1908 gadgetry! This event showcases antique cars from throughout the area...both Model T's manufactured from 1908 thru 1927 and the "newer" Model A's from the late 1920s!

The most recent rally saw over 30 of these classic cars come to town from across the Midwest. There is a $10 fee to enter your antique vehicle in the rally but it's well worth the price of admission.  And it's absolutely free to come and look!

Labor Day Fly-in Breakfast!

The then brand new Kewanee Municipal Airport was dedicated during Hog Days weekend in 1966, Sunday, September 4th to be exact. The next two years, 1967 and 1968, saw what was then called a Sunday breakfast at the airport during Hog Days weekend, hosted by the Kewanee Optimist Club. There's no record of a Hog Fest weekend event being held there for 1969 thru 1972. Then came 1973. The Kewanee Day Care Center, needed a revenue-raising idea for its organization that year. Since Kewanee had the Municipal Airport outside of town,  the idea was to do a pancake breakfast. And since it was being held at the airport, it wouldn't be promoted as just any pancake breakfast but rather a "fly-in" pancake breakfast! Get in your airplane and come on down to the airport for Hog Days and have breakfast. And, of course, if you wanted to come out to the airport the old fashioned way, by car, that would be okay too!

Well, it clicked. The airport was inundated with people and the day care center was off and running with a new annual fund-raiser.

Eventually the day care folk could no longer do the breakfast and it was passed on to other organizations. Currently the Kewanee Community Volunteer Fire Department hosts what's now called the "Fly-in Drive-in Pancake Breakfast," an event that has passed from one organization to another without missing a year since 1973! Literally, hundreds and hundreds of people line up and are served during a 4 hour period usually 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Labor Day Monday.

So if you're in need of a new tradition in your life, jump in the plane and steer toward Kewanee on Labor Day morning.  Or you can still come the "old fashioned" way too!
